I notice that a lot of engineers are very apathetic to social issues that exist in today’s society. They tell themselves, “Oh, I’m an engineer, I don’t need to pay attention to _____.” It’s as if they have some superior complex that makes them “immune” to these social issues.

Okay, so maybe you are really busy doing your problem sets and projects. But that doesn’t make you exempt from having at least a basic understanding of what’s going on.

I think it has to do with how comfortable your life is or is going to be. You can see the same thing with most business students too. In the engineers’ case, I don’t think it’s so much superiority complexes as indifference. Most people don’t care too much about things that don’t affect them. And the current political-economic situation isn’t going to affect the job prospects of engineers too much. Article after article keeps talking about about the most successful college degrees are engineering ones now. Kind of the same thing with business students, but definitely more of the superiority complex involved (I mean, a good portion of them DO want to get into i-banking!). Everyone else not involved in engineering, business, or health is much less certain about their futures. So they naturally care more about inequalities and the lack of jobs.
